Catahoula Leopard Dog

About

The Catahoula Leopard is an American dog breed named after Catahoula Parish, Louisiana.  It become the state dog of Louisiana in 1979.  The word is of Choctaw origin and is translated to mean "sacred lake."  Catahoulas are the only breed of dog to have historically originated in the state of Louisiana.

It is a medium-large, short-coated dog, known for its many varied coat and eye colors and patterns.  They are working dogs and tend to be serious about their work;  whether it's farm work or hunting, and companionable with their family.  They require an owner who is firm and consistent with training and who can provide them with lots of exercise.  NALC's motto is "not everyone needs a Catahoula."
